Can a judge extend discovery deadlines on its own?

Discovery in my case ends dec 31. In December defendants served me a deposition notice 11 days before discovery ends.( dec 31) I filed a motion to squash due to overlapping discovery response and timeliness. The court on its own merits extend discovery deadlines without consulting either party. No previous motions were filed by either party to extend. Is this legal?

Unless it gets out of hand, Judges are very open to extending deadlines for discovery. Many times something that comes up in discovery will trigger a stipulation and avoid a trial.

A judge has discretionary powers to extend a deadline if he/she feels it is warranted.
