Lead female roles that I could go for?

I'm fifteen and I love acting. Unfortunately most roles have 20/20 vision and I have to wear glasses for two reasons:

1. I don't have good vision.

2. I have a prosthetic eye and I don't want to lose the other one.

I don't think that contacts would work for me. They sound like a pain to handle and I'm worried that I might poke my eye out. But I really want to play a lead sometime. The only lead that I know of that wears glasses is Marian Paroo in "The Music Man," which I actually would like to play.

Some other roles that I'd love to play:

-Laurey Williams in "Oklahoma!"

-Christine Daae or Meg Giry or Carlotta in "Phantom of the Opera," mostly Christine Daae.

-Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird, or JoJo the Who in "Seussical."

-Hermia, Helena, or Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

-Sister Sarah Brown in "Guys and Dolls."

-Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde." (I do have naturally blonde hair, but it's golden blonde.)

-Ariel in "The Tempest."

-Myrtle Mae Simmons in "Harvey."

-Antigone in "Antigone," which my school is doing for our spring production this year. I'd also take Ismene or Eurydice.

-Vera Claythorne in "And Then There Were None."

-Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet."

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Do you think that any of these roles could be played by someone with glasses, even if that's not normally the case? Do you think that directors would understand if I told them why I need to wear glasses? (I was born with a coloboma and I had to get the eye removed.)

As a costume designer I assume that all actors have contacts if they don't have good vision. It wouldn't be up to you whether or not you got to wear glasses or not. Unless the role specifically calls for glasses, they are usually a no, the lights on stage reflect off of them oddly. If you are very serious about acting you should give contacts a try. Perhaps in a community theatre a director might make an exception if you are very talented and they really like you, but normally directors don't care about the circumstances, if you can't perform and look the way they imagined the role, you don't get it. And anything classical like Antigone or a shakespeare play I doubt they would allow glasses for because if they set it in the classical time period, there wouldn't have been modern glasses.

I'm not sure I understand why you need to wear your glasses. If you can't wear contacts, just perform with bad vision. You don't have to be able to see everything, you just have to act like you can. I do it all the time.

I wear contacts and they're not terrible to wear. After five to ten minutes you forget about wearing them entirely. Just be careful and you would be fine. I don't know of any roles that you can wear glasses for anyways. Sorry!

Source(s): I have terrible vision too. Every time I got to the eye doctor they go, "How do you see without glasses or contacts?!"
