Question about Pokemon Y? Urgent?

Should I carry out the software update? My 3DS is saying that I'll need an additional compatible SD card or SDHC card with available space to download this software (which I dont have), etc etc.

Do I HAVE to download the update? Because it kind of seems like an unnecessary hassle.

    It is needed if you want to play online, you should have an SD card as they are included with every 3DS. If not they are very cheap to be honest.
