Can My Parents Legally Take Away My Things?

I'm 17, I work at Starbucks and make my own money. I bought some clothes online - and my parents took away ones they said they didn't like. I bought some other ones for my friends for Christmas. One was a religious one - "Pyrex Religion Tee" and another was a Supreme shirt with Three Six Mafia on it, just them posing in front of a white background. I also got some Huf socks, with marijuana leafs on it, also for my friends. My parents took them and threw them away, and they never gave me the chance to return any of the clothes or sell them, or even give them to my friends, which they were for.

They've done this before, they've tossed out my $200 hookah, which I used for non-illegal substances and non-tobacco products... which is sort of understandable b/c they don't like smoking.

Is it fair or even legal for them to do this? They constantly go through my mail, and throw away things they don't like, without even telling me. My mom even opened her Christmas gift and resealed it with this tape that made it look obvious she opened it. It's completely ridiculous, and I don't get why they can't open it, and put it in their room and talk to me about it, as to why they don't like it and stuff. I respect what they don't like, and I rarely make purchases for "inappropriate" clothing for myself.

Bottom line: Can they do this, and is this legal or even ok?

It's illegal for a minor to have a smoking device, doesn't matter what you're smoking out of it. So don't whine about that, you know that was a risk when you dropped that much money on a nice hookah.

And basically, yes, they can trash your stuff. It's not fair but no one's going to help you take legal action against them or anything of that nature. You're not a legal adult, you don't pay rent, and you legally don't really have dick for rights until your 18th birthday. I'd start saving your money, you're gonna want to move out as soon as reasonably possible.

Opening your mail, however, even you being a minor I'm pretty sure that's still way illegal if you're old enough to read. That might be an issue you can press, you do not screw with the federal mail. I mean, nothing's gonna happen, but still, the mail is sacred.

Its your stuff but you are living under their house rules ..try talking to them and tell them that its your stuff and that they don't have the right to take it away from you

Until you are in your own domicile, where you can deny/refuse them entrance too, they can do what they want. So, move out already and don't give them the address.

I don't know about legal. It's certainly not fair or okay though. Have you spoke to them about it, you're almost an adult now, they should be respecting your property!
