Can I begin swimming at age 14?
So I go swimming at the pool over the summer and can swim without drowning but I never really took lessons. Is it possible I can take lessons over the summer from an instructor and learn all the strokes and gain muscle and possibly join my school swim team next year? I want to start getting into sports and im naturally athletic and I think swimming would be a great sport for me even though I never really have swam besides at my local pool with friends over the summer. I know I would have a disadvantage but i dont care if im the worst, I just want to be healthy.

yes, you can definitely start learning all the strokes. Learning is one thing, being good and fast are totally different things. Since you're 14, I'm guessing you're a freshman in high school. I bet if you know how to do a all the strokes (including the Butterfly), then you should be able to make the C-team. Most of the people in the C-team are learners of swimming anyway so you're not really at a disadvantage. I dont know about gaining muscles. Swimming helps you tone your body because you use most of your body.

Make sure you can do all strokes, and fast. Swimmers like myself can get very competitive at meets. Ask your coach for lessons, or pointers. You can definitely join, Swimming is a great for all ages. Just know it is MUCH harder than rec swimming. Good luck (:

As a swimming instructor I have taught every age you can think of, from infants to the elderly. I've even taught swimming lessons to someone in my biology class! Its never too late! Good luck! :)

Of course you can, it's an admirable thing to do and I wish you all the success your efforts will bring.
