Who believes in an afterlife without religion?

You can take that two ways, and I'm interested in either tack.

I ascribe vaguely to Christianity because it's a comfortable vehicle to frame my relationship with God. It's familiar, and helps me connect with my patients. But I do not belong to any particular sect, and organized religion has too many theological disconnects for me. I know there's a next life and welcome it, but most of my belief comes from alternative sources, readings, discussions with near death experience folk, and so on.

I'm not putting down anyone who cleaves closely to a given theology...it's just not a crutch that fits my spirit. So, let's not have any zealot rantings of how wrong I am, ok? This is a friendly post.

The second tack is whether Heaven requires religion. Religion is a path to Heaven, or so it says. The path is not Heaven, just a route to it. Once you arrive somewhere in your car, you put the road map away. You don't need it anymore. You get to Heaven, then drop your crosses, your Bibles, your Korans, your stoles and offering plates/envelopes. They're not needed anymore. You arrived.

Of course no one can prove anything till one gets there, but belief is a lot of what this section is about, eh?

Thoughts?

Dr. D

Update:

Hi all, and thanks for answering! Two dropped in a one word response, so perhaps they're aiming at getting a quick two points instead of offering anything of substance. That's ok by me. Such folk I'd just as soon not read a lot from. Others had some heartfelt and honest responses, and to you I am grateful. Long and merry life to all of us, and may 2014 be a year to fondly remember.

My thoughts have have been that an afterlife does not require religion.

When I consider how big the galaxy and universe are it seems metaphorical to me in a sense of how vast the "afterlife" is. I think the minds of of us all help to construct our views of heaven and other versions. That Christianity may have one version of heaven they will seek upon death, like Hindu's will have their own version they may seek and that the utter vastness of an afterlife gives many different versions of heaven people might ascribe to. Yet I think it all transpires in the same place more or less.

I am an spiritual atheist who believes in the eternal validity of my being. I am an ex-christian who "awakened" one day and my consciousness expanded. Life has been a fascinating adventure ever since.

Buddhists are also atheists who believe in life after death - though in their case there is immediate reincarnation. I too believe that reincarnation is possible but not necessary.

the idea of a heaven, where I stop learning and stop becoming sounds like HELL to me.

I am also a psychic who has delivered a message from a woman's grandfather, and who helped a ghost in my house to transition.

Faith is just an excuse word given when believers have no good reasons for their beliefs!!! If they had any good reasons faith would not be needed!!! Imagination is the only way to view a god and it cannot go from ones imagination to another's it is stuck in your head for life and can only do what you imagine can be done inside your mind, that is why no gods ever go rushing to ones side in an emergency they can't leave home without you!!!

Belief does not mean you have to belong to any particular group. Since we have free will, to think, and do what we choose, the choice is simply ours to believe or not to believe, in God, Jesus, the bible, or any group of people. As for me, and my family we will serve the Lord, and that is my choice. I have had so many experiences in my life, that most people would not live through, and I have survived, through prayer, and my belief. Believing is a strong motivation.
