Scared to cosplay MLP?

I love cosplaying a lot, I've been a cosplayer for a year and a half now and it's the most fun I've ever had.

I just recently got over my irrational fear of the popular show My Little Pony (the fandom scared me half to death and I thought it was ridiculous to love a childrens' show as much as some people did) and I actually watched it and to be honest, I'm quite hooked.

My favorite character is Fluttershy, I relate a lot in personality with her, plus she's a sweetie pie and I have a weak spot when it comes to characters with sweet personalities, I always want to cosplay them.

Here's why I don't do it though:

While I believe everyone has every right to cosplay any character they want, I'm absolutely horrified of doing an MLP cosplay. I don't mean to generalize the fandom or anything, because there are good bronies out there, but really I'm scared to do it because of the massive amounts of creeps that dwell in the fandom.

My friend quit cosplaying Rarity after she discovered a fellow Rarity cosplayer had gotten sexually assaulted at a convention, which is horrible in every sense. Not only that, but a few years back (before she stopped cosplaying Rarity) she went to a convention in her Rarity cosplay, which got a lot of great comments. She also got her picture taken a lot.

She never found those pictures anywhere. Google images, deviantArt, tumblr, etc. She never found them. The utter thought of what some people would be doing with those photographs is... Horrifying.

Based on the hundreds of horror stories, it makes me too scared to even think of cosplaying Fluttershy. But i want to cosplay the character very badly, it would be so much fun to come up with the concept of the costume design, picking out which wigs to use and what materials to make everything out of since really there isnt much of a boundary when cosplaying a humanized fluttershy (i'd be blocking out everything from Equestria Girls... I didnt care for that concept T:)

I'm torn between my favorite hobby and the creepy people in the fandom.

What do you think, is my fear irrational? should I do it anyway despite the few creepy people? Should I get some guts and go out and do it despite the fact I might get some unwanted attention? Or should I play it safe and try to drop the idea and move on to something else?

Thank you c:

Update:

I'm really sorry if I put this in a bad category, I wasn't sure where to put this. They don't exactly have a "cosplay

Update 2:

-and fandoms category"

My edit was cut off.

Sorry!

Hello! Brony here, and I'm sorry you and your friend have had bad experiences with us. But I promise you, the creepy ones among us are a tiny minority, and are not representative of the whole. I hope I can alleviate some of your worries if you'll just hear me out.

I've heard of supposed cases like that of cosplayers being assaulted at brony conventions, but I've never seen an actual source or report of it in the news or anything. Not to discredit your friend, but there's been nasty things said about us that simply aren't true, so please make sure you do your own research into it before jumping to conclusions. It just wouldn't make sense, and it's just punishing the masses (and yourself for that matter) for the deeds of the few.

Again, not to discredit your friend, but as cosplayers, you must know that there is A LOT of cosplay out there. Also, the Internet is HUGE. There's a good chance it's just never been found. I mean, I could pull up piles of pictures of Rarity cosplays at the push of a button. I imagine it's be pretty easy to miss hers, especially if the person posting doesn't really know who she is so there'd be no identifier to narrow the search. Besides, not finding it online does not instantly mean they're doing perverted things with it. For example, I once went to Hawaii and got my picture taken with a hula girl at a luau. You will not find it online anywhere, but does that mean I do perverted things with it? No, it means I took a picture with someone at an event and I wanted to preserve the memory. It was festive, nothing more.

Cosplay in general is something that will attract attention no matter where you do it or what character you do it as, so it's just a risk you'd have to take. That said, there's some common sense things you can do to help secure yourself that should probably be second nature by now anyways. Go with friends or family. Avoid sparsely populated areas of the con (assuming you'd be going to a convention) though I doubt there'd be many if you go to one of the major ones like Bronycon. If you feel uncomfortable by someone's advances -photos, comments, etc.- then tell them so. They may not realize their attention is unwanted as cosplaying is pretty common in such places. Maybe bring a small defensive weapon like pepper-spray or a pocket knife for if worst comes to worst (just don't get paranoid and attack an innocent person!). Make sure your costume isn't too sexual or exposing is a good way to attract more good attention and less bad. Again, all pretty basic, common sense things you probably do already anyways.

I know you may feel scared, but the odds of being creeped on are extremely slim, and the odds of actually getting assaulted infinitesimal. So I say go for it. Don't let the your fears get the best of you! If bronies still weird you out, I urge you to take some time to give these a quick look to try to quell it: http://www.whatisabrony.com/

If you have any further questions on bronies or MLP, feel free to message me and I'd be more than happy to try and help you out! I hope I sufficiently convinced you we aren't that bad. Have a nice day!

There is a creepy side to every fandom (trust me, you do NOT want to meet the creepy Vocaloid fans I know), and there are some people who do questionable things with con pictures, but most of the pictures taken that don't go online are just used as a souvenir for con-goers. Because I know the MLP fandom, I can understand your fears, but if you truly want to cosplay Fluttershy, go ahead! Cosplaying is all about having fun and not worrying about what other people think/do about your costume!

it's not irrational, i'm afraid of the fandom too because of how many creeps there are. if you really want to cosplay fluttershy, go for it, but stick with a group of friends and have at least one person with you everywhere you go. you're much less likely to get creeped on that way.
