We really have no way of knowing. I would prefer the think that we could be the way through which the universe is witnessing, observing and experiencing its own computer simulation. The simulation could be projections and images of us and that we may live and exist somewhere else, probably at the 2 dimensional sphere or event horizon that encased the region we perceived as 3d space plus time dimension universe.

How That would be with vast amounts of computing power far beyond from what we can now even imagine, along with a god-like operating system capable of runing programs capable of making subroutines instantiated as "people" believe that they are capable of independant, original thought as individuals without coming to believe that they are indeed only combinations of circuitry in an unimagionalbe powerful quantum computer. If you want to understand it more throughly than that, then start reading science fiction or make up your own version, because it's all imaginary. Or is it?

Green discusses this in depth in "The Hidden Reality". Perhaps the most interesting question that arises is this: If you can come to believe that such a thing is possible, that simulated universes are indeed possible, they wouldn't you havec to conclude that it's almost a certainty that you do indeed exist in such a simulation? If what we consider to be reality can really be artifically modeled in the labratory on a 1:1 basis at a degree of fidelity indistinguishable from the real thing, and if this could be done at will, perhaps even distributed as chikdren's toys, then there would be an almost infinite number of simulated universes created, which would make the odds that you are somehow in the priveleged position of being in one of the few real ones vanishingly small. So, the argument goes, it is either impossible to created simulated universes, or you are almost certainly within one.

Do I beleive this? No, not for a second, but if I was a simulated person, wouldn't I be programed to believe just that? Maybe it's best not to think too hard about that--your head may start to hurt.

Nobody knows for sure, but there is at a tiny speck of a hint that we might be. If you ask James Gates, the answer just *might* be yes, we are.
