Where can a young person find affordable and safe apartment rentals in Queens or Brooklyn?

Since I moved from NY 20 years ago, rentals have soared in price. When my daughter graduates from college, she's hoping to find employment in the city. But the question remains: where can she afford to live? Sunnyside and Astoria, once affordable areas, are now too expensive for a young person starting out, even with a roommate.

I welcome your suggestions -- even, other than Craigslist, how to find a roommate. She wants to be walkable to the subway, and again, safety is a priority.

I appreciate your feedback.

    Hi Meredith!

As someone who moved to NYC in 2012, I totally understand your dilemma--it's tough to get into a decent neighborhood that's also affordable. I've lived in Flushing (Queens) and Crown Heights (Brooklyn), both of which were lively neighborhoods that didn't require a huge investment on my part. I'd recommend checking NakedApartments.com for a comprehensive NYC real estate search, so you can definitely find something in your price range with all the amenities, etc., that you and your daughter want.
