Why does politics reflect society 30 to 50 years past?
Politics is way behind in terms of what society is behaving like. Also economics also well ahead of the game. For example the Libertarian party is the US was big in the 70's but it is only now we see Libertarian parties. Also parties here in Europe were already euro sceptic as far back as the early 1980's yet only now are they making any impact.
Shouldn't politics reflect society at that point in time then over time politicians can learn and move on from mistakes instead of having huge parties that just recruit large numbers of members and build up over decades until they control all institutions of power in a country. Would not multiparty pluralism work better?

It doesn't. Most of the Green Parties in Europe were founded within a decade ofter the "Limits to Growth" and "Small Is Beautiful" and were represented in governing bodies by the end of the '80s.
I don't really see the relevance of the Libertarian Party to this question, since it was founded not in reaction to changes in society, but to Nixon's politics.

Yes, but in America, any hope of anything but a two party system is blocked by the electoral college. If we could do away with that, we might have a Congress like the Knesset or Britain's Parliament.
