Coast Guard MST questions?
I've been reading up on Coast Guard ratings, and Marine Science Technician seems most interesting. However, I have a few questions:
1) Overall, is it harder to get in than most CG ratings?
2) If you had a degree in environmental sciences, oceanography, biology, or related fields, would it help you in becoming an MST or help you get promoted faster?
3) Are there a lot of billets open, and if so, is there a lot of competition?
4) Is boot camp more challenging than other CG rating boot camps, and if so, is it harder mentally or physically?
I know the Coast Guard is harder to get in than most (if not all) military branches, and that it is usually the most challenging branch to get into mentally, so please don't tell me that.

1 - If you have the ASVAB score, you can put your name on the A school list. It does require a high ASVAB but that's not impossible. I don't know what you mean by harder to get in?
2 - The degree will probably give you a leg up on understanding a lot of the more scientific or technical stuff than a guy/girl that is 20 and has simply a high school diploma. But it will get you nothing in the way of becoming an MST or gaining promotion faster. Again, ASVAB score, A school list, done. Degree or no degree you'll be on equal playing ground.
3 - Are billets open? Maybe, probably, it doesn't matter what is open today. You aren't in the CG, you aren't through boot camp, you aren't awaiting a billet pick. What is open today might not be when you finally get in, if you get in. That is a pointless question.
4 - Boot camp is boot camp. Boot camp isn't defined by ratings, no one has a rating in boot camp. You are all Seaman Recruits.

By the time you get done with college, you probably won't care about things like that.
