I've been told that you need 3-5 credit cards and use them only up to half and are good paying customer for maybe a year before you'll be able to get creditors to work for you.

When they tell you you had too few active accounts means you weren't buying anything on them.

It means that you have not established any real credit. You need to get a credit card or two or buy a car and get a small car loan. You have to do something to establish credit.
