How much Wood would a Woodchuck chuck?
If a Woodchuck could chuck would? I really need to know for my science class on woodchuck chucking (I need the answer in milligrams) and over a 24 hour period. It must be one woodchuck and no beavers! Thanks

A fascinating question, to be sure.
The average woodchuck can reach a mass of 14 kilograms, and we'll assume that his wood-chucking capacity is proportional to his body size. Now everybody knows that the caloric requirements for placental mammals is in the neighborhood of 24.7 kilocalories per kilogram of body mass, so an average woodchuck would need to ingest approximately 345.8 kilocalories per day. Now it's really difficult to say what percentage of that energy is reserved just for basic life support and what percentage can be used for chucking wood, but let's assume that 50% of a woodchuck's caloric intake goes to the task of chucking wood. So that's about 173 kilocalories (724 kilojoules) that the woodchuck can dedicate to chucking wood.
Now how fast must the woodchuck actually chuck the wood? Again, this is strictly conjecture on my part, but let's say that the average wood chuck chucks wood at the speed of 5 meters per second. Using the formula for kinetic energy, we find that the average adult woodchuck on a balanced diet can chuck 57,920 kilograms of wood per day, almost 58 metric tons! That's quite impressive!
Naturally, not every woodchuck will work up to his full potential, these times being as trying as they are. So let's round it down a bit and assume that a woodchuck may reasonably be expected to chuck about 30 metric tons (30,000,000,000 mg) of wood per day. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Milligrams? Well, this will be a large number indeed. Approximately 201403071803446.820142425975720149233720142137 milligrams in a 24 hour period. Of course, that's just an approximate number. The exact number will take longer to calculate.

To be a Junior Woodchuck,you must be between 8 and 10 yr.old.
They can only chuck about 80,000 mg or 1/2 tree a day.
However, there are 50,000 of them and soon coming to a city near you.
