When did "selfie" become word?

I don't understand. When I first purchased a phone with a camera built in it (2003), I was taking pictures of myself and posting them on the old Yahoo! chatrooms profile site. Back then it was just a picture you took yourself without the aid of anyone else. Now it's just a ridiculous popular trend. Why?

Well the English language has one of the largest databases of words compared to any other language, because of the structure and grammar of English, and the necessity of needing new words to describe something faster and easier.

Why? Culture is always shifting, new words pop in to describe social phenomenons so that it's easier to communicate with other people involved in said phenomenons.
