Why are ship captains the first to save themselves in an emergency?

This latest Korean ferry accident is almost an exact reenactment of the Costa Concordia accident. Ship captain meanders out of the bridge deck and carouses with the public . Ship runs aground hits reefs or rocks, he immediately saves himself.

The worst part about this is how the young ones are brainwashes to OBEY the captains word, He tells everybody to stay put. Those kids were all wearing life vests. Why tell them to stay put? They would have been safer floating in the water

    Probably because most people in power these days aren't even remotely qualified to be in that position. They probably knew a few a people around the industry and took advantage of their connection to get where they are.

    Just look at politics as your grand example. Do really think those self serving politicians are really qualified to run a state? let alone a country? They just have the right connections and money to get where they are.
