The following are resources relevant to your questions:

"...Nevertheless, besides the doctrinal differences needing to be resolved, Christians cannot underestimate the burden of long-standing misgivings inherited from the past, and of mutual misunderstandings and prejudices. Complacency, indifference and insufficient knowledge of one another often make this situation worse. Consequently, the commitment to ecumenism must be based upon the conversion of hearts and upon prayer, which will also lead to the necessary purification of past memories. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Lord's disciples, inspired by love, by the power of the truth and by a sincere desire for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation, are called to re-examine together their painful past and the hurt which that past regrettably continues to provoke even today. All together, they are invited by the ever fresh power of the Gospel to acknowledge with sincere and total objectivity the mistakes made and the contingent factors at work at the origins of their deplorable divisions. What is needed is a calm, clear-sighted and truthful vision of things, a vision enlivened by divine mercy and capable of freeing people's minds and of inspiring in everyone a renewed willingness, precisely with a view to proclaiming the Gospel to the men and women of every people and nation..."

The questions seem incomplete. I think we need some more of the context.

Reconciling has solely to do with Jesus finished work on the cross. Reconciliation has to do solely with a one on one relationship with Jesus Christ, and then the love, that is shed abroad in the hearts of believers, would have a trickle down effect among themselves. The bible in 1 John 4:20:"

"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen"

V21:"And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."

Jesus Christ by dying on the cross of Calvary, by the shed blood sacrifice, is the chief reconciler between man and God, to all who come by faith in this finished work.

The gospel has not changed. The word of God was in the beginning and will be the same in the end.

The reason that lots of unbelievers have issue with the gospel of Jesus Christ, is that they think that the Word of God, is not relevant in this current world. Rather, the word of God is Timeless, and is relevant even more so now, in this world, than it has ever been. The reason I say this, is that the Gentile world, through whom the gospel is recognized and spread, have outnumbered the Jewish nation, who are the previous "oracles of God", and when Jesus Christ came, he turned all of the laws and the prophets, to make the word more effective, for the Gentile world, who did not have the benefit of the Torah or the Laws that were given to Jews from the book of Genesis onwards. A child can keep the commands of God, when they accept Jesus Christ into their hearts, and depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance. So as old as the laws of God are, the relevance of it is more potent or effective to a wider generation of new believers, from a non-Jewish perspective. Jesus said, "At my father's table, ALL are welcome", and this is reflected in Acts 2 , when the Holy Spirit gave the impartation of tongues, so every race and tribe and nationality could understand, in their own language, what was being spoken due to the work of the Holy Spirit of God.

Question one: It hasn't. Religions are drawing farther and farther apart.

question two: It has turned more people against religion. As for the religious, it has made them harden their hearts, close their minds, and turn the voting booth into a weapon that is being used against all who disagree. I would NEVER have thought - even 5 years ago - that I would become an anti-theist. I used to really dislike those people. Now I understand why they are so angry. They are under constant assault by Christians and even the so-called TRUE or even moderate Christians are not standing up to defend me. They are mostly silent in the face of such gross atrocities - committed in the name of Jesus and a god of love. Shame on you all.

Source(s): I live in the USA. It's very bad here. Frightening even. Not so throughout Europe and Australia. I'm thinking of moving to get away from Christian tyranny.

Do you want an answer from the faithful..? or do want an answer from the lost..? God loves you so much.

Yikes! Neither of those are very directly answered by scripture. The questions are directed at personal experience and historic knowledge. They are based on what some might call horizontal interrelationships.

Reconciliation as I know it, has to do with forgiveness and an attempt at peace with someone who might have been in disagreement or at odds with another person. Sometimes forgiveness needs to be asked for. Other times it's just good to forgive regardless of a lack of request.

Either way it is supposed to be the way we are supposed to behave towards one another, to foster love, fellowship, peace, and friendship. Setting aside all differences for the sake of Christ and the continuance of his message.

    >How has the task of reconciliation between Christians refocused the meaning and purpose of modern Christian identity?

It hasn't. Because there is no reconciliation other than at surface level.

    >How have conversations between Christians and members of other religions shaped Christian ideas about what it means to be religious in the modern era?

It hasn't. Because xtians are not even slightly interested in what other religions have to say.

    That'll be $20.
