What is criminal mischief?
Really? What is the definition of criminal mischief? What kinds of things could land you a criminal mischief charge?

It is a crime against the property of another that does not involve theft. Although commonly used as a synonym for "vandalism" it is generally a more severe charge and requires proof of some intent..while not as severe as one resulting in the destruction of property (arson, for example).
So to illustrate... someone who idly walks down the street, holding out a piece of chalk so that it leaves a long line along a homeowner's wall might be cited for "vandalism" but probably not "criminal mischief."
Had the person used the same chalk to "tag" the wall or write something hateful or threatening to the property owner, he would be charged with criminal mischief.
Similarly, let's say someone puts a firecracker in an apartment mailbox...besides the explosion, the mail also ignites and the resulting fire destroys two of the surrounding mailboxes. That person would be cited for criminal mischief, but not arson..
