Should the Yankees promote Jeter? Captain just doesn't seem sufficient.?
Elevate him to team major or maybe colonel. He's in his final season, deserves something no player has had before.

Captain is just fine as a title. Nothing more is needed. If it was good enough for Lou Gehrig it's good enough for Jeter.
I hate to say this since I've been an avid Yankee fan since the 1960's but Rick has the best answer here so far. I watch every inning of every game and it's clear to me that Derek just can't handle shortstop anymore. He dropped another throw right to him last night that should have ended the game with a double play. Tanaka had to get another out because Jeter simply couldn't catch a throw right to him. His range is gone. it was never great but was always adequate. It simply no longer is. He really should be at DH if he's going to play.
He's not the only defensive liability on this team either. The Yankee defense overall is costing them outs game after game. But since this question is about Jeter, I'll stop there.

I've always felt that, since Jeter seems to play so well on the big stage, he should have been called "Captain Crunch".
Bottom line is that in a few years he'll have the one title that matters the most - Hall of Famer.

Captain is used in sports like Captain of a ship, not an Army rank.
According to legend, an early baseball game was played by a team from I think Boston against a team of New England sailors. The sailors had a team "captain" who also 'announced' the players in a loud voice to the fans, using nautical terms - "Johnson is up to bat, Wilson is on the deck, and Jones is in the hold"...creating our terms "on deck" for the next man after the current batter, and "in the hole" for the man after him.

No. He's a classic example of the Peter Principle.
Just leave him alone and he'll go away. Bye.

If you haven't noticed they already erected a statue at SS. Dude moves slower than me. They will give him his own zip code.

They should promote him to the front office. He is killing them defensively and has vitually no timely hits and his power is gone
