Budget gaming rig basics :) help?
Alright guys, I really like pc gaming but I haven't had any sort of dedicated rig (only laptops that can't run anything) and I'd like to buy/make one with some of the money that I earn over the summer (hopefully in the ballpark of 5k). I obviously don't want to spend that much on a rig, but I have a lot of money to work with. My target expense would be between $800 possibly all the way up to $1500 dollars depending on the range of quality and playability. I'd be looking to push ultra graphics, but in most cases I would be happy playing on high quality. I'll probably be playing borderlands 2, bioshock, Skyrim, battlefield, and stuff like that. I have a few questions.
1. Which is more important, the cpu, or the gpu?
I would assume the graphics card is definitely more important, but one can never know for sure.
2. Would It be possible to upgrade a really old desktop (an old optiplex) and make it into a better rig?
3. What would the cost be of just the hardware? I have a decent monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

1. You got that one right on, GPU is more.
2. Not worth doing upgrade to it, actually depends on the 'old', 2 years old, quite 'new' and upgrade is OK.
3. Completely anew $1200 may land you quite elite hardware.

Basically look at the top of the line CPU and then see what motherboard chipset that's compatible with it. Don't take the top of the line CPU take a more budget one, but you'll know you can easily upgrade, and improve your system a year or two from know by just swapping out the CPU. So a budget CPU with room to upgrade and then focusing your cash on the GPU. Again maybe not top of the line GPU but that's six months old. Doing that you'll get a pretty good system within your budget range.
