If you believe that a private firearm transaction should require a background check?

then do you also believe that a private automobile sale should require the seller to obtain proof of insurance and verification of a valid drivers license? I see this all the time. A car can be just as dangerous, and in some cases more dangerous than a gun. Would you support a law that requires all private vehicle sales to obtain and verify proof of valid insurance and obtain and verify proof of a valid license?

Update:

Ok, all kinds of people are jumping and speaking of when the car gets registered. So again as the private person selling your car to a private buyer you believe that you should be required to... what...go down to the DMV to ensure they get the car registered? You all seem to be missing the point here, so let me spell this out clearly. If a person is willing to purchase a car from a private seller with no insurance or license, what makes you think they will register the car at the DMV?

Update 2:

And again. You are all referring to things that the buyer must do after buying the car. the question was BEFORE WE EVER GET TO THE DMV should the person selling the car be required to check that information?

The only reason I would say that a private fire arm transaction should NOT require a back ground check is for the simple reason that the American people need far more strength than they currently have. If all fire arms were to be registered, the government could come and confiscate them at any given moment and we would be ever more likely to lose our constitutional Bill of Rights right away, there goes freedom of speech! The corporate rich have more privacy rights than all of us do and they are the ones most likely to beome tyrannical. We are the last ones to get to know what our credit rating is, we should get RID of the credit rating system since it is so corrupt. Private fire arms sales are about the only thing we have left going in our favor these days!

Yes I believe it should be and I am a conservative gun owner however enforcing such a law would be nearly impossible. Like most crimes it can't be enforced until a crime is committed and the perpetrator discovered. By then it is too late. I can sell both my guns in private to a neighbor and no one will ever know unless something happens later to draw attention to the fact. Now the Gun show loophole can be closed simply enough and that would be huge. They could pass a law disallowing private sellers from participating in Gun shows unless they are set up to run background checks and then require them to do so. OR they can pass a law that requires any one attending a gun show to show proof they have had a background check completed in the past three months. That problem can be solved. But man on the street transactions simply cannot be enforced.

driving a car is not a right.........

  • For the guns, yes. Felons will try to circumvent the background check system by avoiding legit firearms dealers. If he or she is caught with it and the serial number comes back to you, you could be screwed.

As for cars, say you sell it from your property, you would not let the buyer have your plates (Common sense) so the buyer would have to get it registered before he or she drives it away with no plates or they would need to have it towed to it's destination.

So no. I don't think that I would be concerned about proof of anything as long as you both have a copy of the bill of sale and it shows the exact date and time of the transaction.

When you transfera car title in this state you are required to pay a tax. The law requires all drives to drive with a license and have insurance. That is not the responsibility of the seller. In this state you can not buy ammo or a gun without a gun owners ID card. Which is the way ALL states should go. It is NOT a violation of Second Amendment rights to require such an ID.

The is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits the registration of guns, it is NOT a violation of any person rights.

They pretty much already do. In order to transfer title the DMV requires proof of insurance. and already has driver's licence and driving records.

The BUYER has to have proof of insurance. It's checked every year when the car is registered. What planet do you live on where they don't require a license and insurance?
