Why do people call areas Gun Free Zones?

They don't exist. You would need to disarm an entire population like on the scale of North Korea- no mass gun shootings by civilians reported there.

In fact the USA has completely the opposite. We have more guns than people.

Don't be a jerk. Gun free zone signs are a request, not a command. Except in my case - you bring a gun into my place of business like those "Open Carry" jackasses in Texas, I'm going to assume you intend the worst, and I'm going to respond immediately and appropriately. I keep an auto-loading 12-bore handy and the Marines taught me how to use it. Do you feel lucky, punk?

A gun free zone is an area surrounding a building, usually a school, where you are not allowed to bring in a weapon, legal or not. It is a legal term.

Thus if caught by the police even having a hunting rifle in the trunk of your car while parked in a gun free zone, you can be arrested.
