There are only 4 major plug types around the world for AC. The American, the British, The European and the Australian/ New Zealand ones.
All countries think they have the best, and for 110V. AC, there is only America and a couple of other places worldwide using it. Most countries are on 220/240V.
Although there are a few instances of DC being used for distribution of electricity around the world, for the most part it is converted back to AC before it reaches end consumers.

I think dc to dc converters, sort of like switching power supplies will eventually be cheaper than transformers and they are already twice as efficient, so we will over the next century switch most everything to dc except the big three phase alternators. There are a few other things ac does better, but new developments may change most of that. At very high voltage and power both ac and dc are very dangerous.
USA plugs have changed 3 times for 120 volts ac and thousands of not compatable designs are in common use = greedy business people are the main problem as average reliability is possibly worse.

The British system is probably the safest. Sockets and plugs must meet a minimum standard set by the government (BS 1363). There is also a fuse in the plug with a value appropriate to the load.
The Earth/ground pin is mandatory and the socket must have shutters on the live and neutral.

Different countries have different set ups. All have DC(direct current/battery). AC(alternating current), depending on where you are, the cycles/hertz are different. European electrical for household is twice what it is here in the states, they have 220V we have 110V.
