We live by the woods and I use a mixture of mint oil and dawn dish soap (you can also mix a small amount of vanilla extract if the mint irritates their skin). I don't use any flea medicines and this has kept fleas and ticks off my long haired outdoor dog for two years. I use a recipe similar to the one as the listed source without the vinegar.

Try diatomaceous earth. It cuts up the fleas bodies and they dehydrate and die. It's safe to use on your carpet and furniture and even on your pets.
