Taking science and math courses at a CCC for UC pre med?
Hi I am currently attending a California Community College and I am planning on transferring to a UC for pre med. I want to go to med school. I just found out from my counselor that I will be at the CCC for four years to take all of these science and math classes in preparation for my major. But I read somewhere that UC's and Med schools dont like students that take those classes at a CCC. So is my counselor wrong or do I really have to take a bunch of complex science and math classes at the CCC to transfer for my major. I am majoring in Biological Sciences right now.

You can probably transfer to a UC after 2 years. You don't need to complete all your general ed requirements at CC, you just need at least 60 semester units. And pre-med isn't a major at UC's. I think people usually major in biology or some similar science.

There's no problem taking prerequisites at community college as long as you maintain an outstanding GPA and have a diverse portfolio to show when you apply to med school. But it would be better to spend two years at CC for general education classes and you're major subjects at a university. See http://bitly.com/1mI6Bu5 to find schools based on major or state.

Pre med is not actually a major. The classes that your counselor said you have to do for your major is going be prereqs for a major that you will have to declare, not for what the med schools want to see. So for example, if you have the intent of getting a bachelors degree in chemistry, the preparation work you will do at the CCC is going towards preparing you for transfer admission into the upper division courses of the Chemistry major. You can do the pre-med stuff at the UC. You can check out the various good med schools' website to get an idea of what courses they are looking for.

Try not to take all your pre-med classes at a community college, they do look down upon that. Make sure you transfer to a 4 year which for you is UC and do most of your pre-med classes over there and you will be fine. Just take your pre-req to transfer and try to do most pre med classes at the 4 year.
