I have made illustrations which don't take up the entire page. When I try to extract just the image part, and leave behind the empty page part...it doesn't work. I need to get just the image to convert to a jpeg file.

You can use the print screen feature, or use the snipping tool (in Windows 7 and up if I'm not mistaken), or if you have Adobe Reader, go to Edit -> Take a Snapshot. In the last two cases, select the area you want to copy, paste it into MS Paint, and save it as a jpg. I'm pretty sure Snipping Tool has a way to directly save in jpg format as well.

When you have the image on screen, click on "PRTSC SYSRQ" which will be just above the "Backspace" key. After you have done this, go to the Start Menu and scroll down to click on "Accessories" and then scroll down to click on "Paint". When Paint has opened, click "Ctrl" and "V" at the same time and the screenshot will appear in the work area of Paint. Now at the top left you'll see a rectangle with "Select" and a small arrow under it. And beside this will be the words "Crop", "Resize" and "Rotate". Click on "Select" and then choose "Rectangular Shape". Place your cursor on the top left corner of your image and then left click and hold while you drag the cursor to the bottom left of the image and then continue to drag the cursor to the bottom left of the image. Now unclick and then click on "Crop". Now save the image as a JPEG and you're done.
