Wireshark not working properly?

When I click on capture packets it does not capture anything,

and when I click on interface list, I get only one option "Local area connection" which when does not caputre any packets.

I tried turning off firewall and anti virus then capturing, nothing worked.

I am a beginner so I dont know that much about wireshark, is there anything I am missing out ?

    1. The current version of WireShark is 1.12.1 -- you should upgrade to it if you haven't already done so. There are very few reasons to troubleshoot an older version.

    2. I assume you're at home on your own network. Trying this anywhere else may get you into some legal hot water.

    3. You seemed confused that only 1 interface option was listed. Are you using Wi-Fi or Ethernet to connect to your router? Do you have a Wi-Fi adapter installed?

    4. You don't need to turn off your firewall or anti-virus software. Go ahead and re-enable them.

    5. My 'Interface List' shows my LAN adapter *and* my Wi-Fi adapter. More importantly, without me doing anything -- the PACKETS count is rising on my LAN adapter entry. This makes sense because I'm connected via Ethernet. So, until this starts happening for you, WS may be telling you that it's not seeing anything go through your LAN adapter.

    6. You might as well click on the HELP button on the Interface List window. It looks like it steps you through how to set things up. Start with section "2.8 Installing WireShark under Windows". Make sure you installed their Pcap application during the WS install. Re-install WS if you're not sure.
