I've always spelt it with the h - it looks unfinished without it. I noticed a while ago that many don't use the h and I looked it up and think I recall seeing that the correct spelling is without the h. I'm not happy with that, so I still use the h.

In my Shorter Oxford (3rd edition, revised with corrections 1977) the spelling is given as "veranda, verandah" in that order and dated from 1711. Both spellings have been acceptable for a very long time.

Due to fiscal restrictions and the associated budgetary tightening ahhhhh, measures the 'h' in verandah will no longer be in use.
This is another ummmm, prime example of unnecessary wastage by previous Labor governments.

The word is Portuguese - veranda. No H. The proper question is why the H was added in the first place.
