I'm not starting school until next year; can I start getting scholarships and grants now?

I'm going to start school next Fall, and have already applied. I will be getting a large amount of my schooling free, as my mom works for the University I will be attending.

As such, I will only need to pay for books, supplies and 75% of 1 year of college.

In order to stay debt free, I planned on applying for grants and scholarships. I have a handful of questions:

-Are grants all based on financial income?

-Can scholarship money be used on more than just schooling, or is the extra money required to be returned after schooling is paid for?

-Am I able to apply for scholarships ahead of time? (I'm not supposed to fill out my FAFSA until the beginning of 2015)
