'is', 'was', and 'were' are all verbs of being.

is, was, was, were, was was was, is, was, is. These are all Helping Verbs. The words in the sentences that seem like verbs are actually being used as adjectives... speeding car, yowling cat, waking up last night.... Used in a different context these could each be verbs. He was speeding, the cat was yowling, they were waking up... etc.
A good way to remember helping verbs... it sort of has a rhythm to it...
