Is there a way to make 'homemade' water repellent for fine leather purses, that is safe to use?

The prices for the sprays is quite expensive, and the ones I remember purchasing smelled very strong. I'm looking for an alternative that I can make, obviously without the harsh fumes. Thanks.

Update:

I should mention that the whole purse is three layers of long fringe.

use vaseline. It works very well on leather and is a water repellent. Just make sure to wipe it clean.

google it for tips but i use it on my shoes to clean them

Any moisturizer can be used. Use soft cloth to wipe off excess and polish it a little.
