You drop a stone from a position of rest.
How far will it fall vertically in the first 9 s?
The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s^2.

The object accelerates at a rate of 9.8 m/s/s for 9 seconds. If it's started at rest, it's velocity at 9 seconds is:
9.8 m/s/s x 9s = 88.2 m/s (ignoring any other forces acting on the object, such as air resistance)
The average speed over that 9 seconds is therefore:
(88.2 m/s - 0 m/s)/2 = 44.1 m/s
In 9 seconds, the object has traveled at an average speed of 44.1 m/s. So it has traveled:
44.1 m/s x 9 s = 396.9 m.
Thus, after 9 seconds, the object has fallen 396.9 m.
Hope this helps!
