It comes down to one word. Liability. I personally doubt anything would happen. Especially from a hacker. Its more likely that some nutcase can find this to be a prime opportunity to do commit some kind of atrocity. But if something were to happen not only would Sony get sued but so would the theaters. I'm not sure if you remember but there was a shooting in Colorado in a movie theater during the Batman premiere. That theater is currently being sued. So for them its not worth the risk.

Sony claims the theaters made the decision to pull the movie, not them.

I still say it's a load of bs. There were no credible threats, just some vaguely worded anonymous email threats. The US continues to sink to new lows. I seriously don't recognize what country I live in anymore because it's sure not The United States of America.

Movie may be in short NOT GOOD! Needed all the help to get butts on seats! Debatable if N Korea did anything. Follow the money, motive, who benefits. Not as if the movie will be erased! No doubt will still circulate via downloads or Whatnots. Or maybe write off for insurance.

Fear? Not seen the actual atrocities inflicted on civilians around the globe? Those with amputated arms, legs, blind, deaf, forever in wheelchair no doubt you should talk to them! Fear? No movie is worth it! Not even this one!

Fear? Strange how people in US are so litigious!! Over litigious!!

You fancy attending a "film" for the privilege of SUFFERING?

Your choice! Sane people look at hard CASH! Money, talks! Liability! Compensation!

    Being held to account!

Nothing like the threat of being sued to makes some see reason!

It could be exactly as read in the press. However, there may be more to this than you'll read, for example blackmail over CEOs' affairs, illegal behaviour, deviancy... The easy option is perhaps to shelve the film (for the CEOs).

The hackers threatened to bomb some movie theaters. The threat was doubtless hollow but was enough to scare off movie theater chains, giving Sony no place to run their film.

Americans are afraid. Intimidated by a foreigner with a bad haircut.

The producers of this movie could not pay for advertising coverage ... everyone knows about it now ... and when it finally hits the cinemas ... and it will ... they will start rolling the $$$$ in ... !

It's a beautiful mix of politics, fear, and irrationality.
