I only get hot water for a few minutes and then cold?
My son thinks it is a lower element and is coming to town to fix it but can't get here for 2 weeks. I am fine with the amount of hot water--but is it safe to use or are there problems I could cause by postponing repairs.

The only problem is the lack of hot water. The one caution I would issue is that when one element goes, the other may not be far from failing. Ask him to replace both since you must drain the tank anyway. Turn the power off to the tank before working on it and do not turn the power on until the tank is full and all of the air is out of it. The heating elements will explode if heated in air. This is more noisy than dangerous since they are in the tank. You might also do some shopping for a new tank just in case and get an installed and removal of the old unit price.

No it shouldn't cause additional problems to continue as you have. It is likely that the problem is the lower element as that is the one that operates the most.

You should also check the dip tube. If that is broken you can get the same problem..
