Is there a polite and more personal way to suggest to somebody that we shouldn't talk at their workplace, for fear of them being told off?

Being told off? I don't get it. And when you say, "we shouldn't talk" at their workplace, are you referring to gossip, or ALL TALK? It's difficult to provide a clear answer with such LIMITED information.

    Have a polite day.

Etiquette takes over where laws end.

Just tell them you have work to do. Get headphones and put them on. Limit the discussions. If all that fails - complain to your supervisor.

    "Shut up foo"
