What do you think of the expression "keep a pulse on"? In my day, it was "keep your finger on the pulse of" but is this good wording now?

    My economic teacher once mentioned to mean to keep an eye on the economic trending to achieve better leverage."keep your finger on the pulse of" could mean the same more or less.
