can a judge increase damages in a lawsuit beyond the claim of the plaintiff?

as an example, a women is severely assaulted by a police officer and is only seeking $50,000 in damages, can a judge increase the damages to $1 million or more if they so choose?

    Yes, but court settlements are based upon applicable law and precedence.

    no, but the judge would advise the claimant's lawyer to take into account costs they should claim for,that they might have over looked

    no . not at all judges will give you if you win the amount you asking ,no more
