Should I participate in my companies "Bio-metric Health screening" sponsored by the health insurer?

I think it's cool that you can get cholesterol, glucose and a bunch of other tests done at the company "health fair".

My concern is that this gives the Health Insurance company access to your test results which could get you dropped or harm/delay later claims or increase premiums.

"Insurance Companies are not in the business of paying claims. They take the money each month and invest to make more money." (quote from a relative in the Insurance business).

As long as someone is getting these tests done at their private doctors - isn't doing the tests at work going to harm you in the long run?

Update:

"harm you" - meaning you are giving very specific health data to your insurance company who want to drop your coverage BEFORE you develop some expensive condition.

By participating in the health fair, you have a better chance of having lower premiums. That's the point of wellness events. The healthier you and your coworkers are, the lower the premiums because claims would be lower (in theory). The insurance company CANNOT drop you. Your relative in the insurance business probably isn't in the insurance business anymore, because that's not how it works. An insurance company IS in the business to pay claims. If the claims are higher than they expected, then they just raise the premiums.

Currently, it is against the law for them to use the test results to drop you or increase premiums.

Doing the tests isn't going to harm you in the way that you think. You are giving very specific health data to your insurance company who cannot use it to drop your coverage, so there is no danger in them having it.

However, if you are having the tests done at your own doctor, then getting them done again may not be smart, for a different reason. The tests are not perfect. The more often you get tested, the more likely you are to get a wrong result eventually.

Actuaries who study when you might die so Insurance can cut you off are a specific role in many insurance companies.

Co worker's wife worked in an Insurance company. She sent prescription claim info to doctors to reverse-diagnose customers health problems getting around HIPPA & doctor-patient confidentiality rules & identify "high risk" customers.

Anybody who owns Insurance Company stock - sees the annual shareholders reports know that investments of all that cash are the main reason to invest in Insurance stocks.

Guy in Gym told me about a school chum who's father worked for United Health Care & would get regular bonuses for denying claims.

These are just a few stories besides my BIL who refused to sell us life insurance because it was a bit of a scam for young people.

I agree with the Pickle; your relative doesn't understand insurance. Insurance companies' sole being is to pay claims.

Insurance companies do not record your results for use to increase premiums on your or on the group. Premiums are the result of claims paid, and if the company pays more in claims they increase premium, where if they pay less in claims they decrease premium.

Currently the law(ACA) states that an insurer can not disqualify or terminate you for pre existing conditions.
