For metal ions from groups 1, 2, or 13 (on a periodic table) in ionic compounds, how does the name of the cation differ from the name of the metal?

The name of the cation in an ionic compound is the name of the element. e.g. MgCl2 is magnesium chloride; NaCl is sodium chloride; BeBr2 is beryllium bromide.
