what is a zero hour contract?

I keep seeing the term but can not find a definition. Since it appears to be from Britain can you please tell me what it is.

    It means you have 0 guaranteed hours of work, effectively you're a Temp-worker, only you do have an exclusivity-contract with the firm.

    It's a very bad deal for an employee, because you need to be 'on-call' pretty much all the time, and you're not getting regular pay, only hours-worked, which can vary from 0 per month, to higher, but almost never a full-wage.
