At what point does defending yourself become against the law?

I have this friend who is having unwanted sexual advances thrown his way by a drug dealer in the same apartment complex as him. He's been grabbed forcefully by this drug dealer, and thinks it may soon escalate into rape.

So basically could my friend legally stab this guy if such an attack were to occur?

You are usually allowed to defend yourself in mortal danger, and depending on what state you're in, the allowed weapons may vary. I would arm myself with something less lethal than a knife. Perhaps pepper spray or a Tazer.

Go chop some wood out back you will feel better. Hope your husband's shoulder is better.

He can use enough force as required to stop the attack.
