I'm not out of the closet yet so I don't want to just say "I'm gay, sorry" because I don't trust him to not tell anybody else (even though I want to come out soon, I'm just waiting for the right time). On the other hand, I can't just say "don't talk to me," he's really nice and we go to the same school so I don't want to be mean but I'm not exactly sure what to say?

Rn we are messaging each other and he is hanging out with his friends. What should I do?

You don't have to say anything.  Talk to him like he's a friend.  If he asks to go on a date, so "no, thanks" if you don't want to go.  At some point in life you're going to have to learn to tell people "no".
