Tax on paycheck.?
On my first paycheck, there was no Federal or State Income Tax withheld. My paycheck says "Exemptions/Allowances": Tax Override. On my W-4, I marked 1 because no one can claim me as a dependent and 1 because I am single. I have done this for all of my other jobs, and I have had tax withheld. My boss is out of town until next week, so I cannot contact him about it. Can someone please explain this to me?

If you worked less than the full pay period your gross earnings may not have been high enough to cause income taxes to be withheld. If your paycheck had Social Security and Medicare Taxes withheld, you probably don't need to worry about it.
BUT if there were NO taxes withheld, you need to go to whomever is responsible for preparing the payroll checks and clarify immediately. You don't want a big surprise at year end when you have to pay all the taxes on your earnings all at once.

Options:
1. You did not earn enough money to have federal or state taxes.
2. They mistakenly coded you as exempt
Only your payroll dept / boss can tell you the answer.

If your first check was for just part of a pay period, you probably didn't make enough on that check to have tax withheld.

very possible the amount of your gross did not merit any income tax be withheld when you claim single 2
income tax is not automatically withheld, your gross may be so low that none is required to be withheld

They made a mistake, that's all. Or the check was so small it triggered no withholding.
