Newest smartphones may be equipped with NFC with Bluetooth (wireless) for easy paring. And all smartphones will have Bluetooth and 3.5mm 4 conductor plug. (Right, left, mic, neutral). Some cellphones uses 2.5mm 4 conductor plug.
If you have a pair of headphones and it does not work correctly, it is because you don't have a mic input on your headphones.
Laptop and desktop speakers use a 3.5mm 3 conductor plug. Try it and find out.
Bluetooth or 3.5mm plug is your most common option.

3.5mm.
Pretty much the standard for any device using headphones. Of course though there is a slight chance it could be different but that would depend on your phone, which wasn't mentioned.
