What is crime like in Toronto City?
I live in New Brunswick, Canada, and I've never visited Toronto so I wouldn't know; what's crime like in Toronto? I'm writing s story that takes place in Toronto, and my main character goes out late at night and is mugged by a man with a gun.
I need to know; is this likely to happen? She is not in any particularly bad side of town, and; is there a specific area of Toronto referred to as the "bad side of town" (I've heard both North side and Jane St., but I wouldn't know).
Thank you!

Jane-Finch has been noted for the prevalence of crime, but it s not downtown, it s in North York. Regent s Park and St. James Town (King, Queen, Dundas and Front Streets from Sherbourne east to the Don River) are about the same - lots of "community housing", noise, drugs and drink. Parkdale (on the north side of the Gardiner Expressway from the CNE grounds - Dufferin and Queen St. West) and Riverdale (where the Don Jail was) are similar areas. They re in the City of Toronto, pre-1997 amalgamation, so they ve always been "Toronto". Actually, there are pockets of poor housing all over the city south of Bloor Street and people live on the street and under bridges all over, except perhaps in Forest Hill and Rosedale, where the rich folks are. We have our "permanent patrons" sleeping in the various downtown libraries and other public buildings when they are open.
As for muggings and thefts - as Anna wrote, crime happens. Not a lot of violent ones. There usually is a murder or two or three over the weekends, more often in summer. Same with corner store stickups. Shootings in public places, like the one in the Eaton Centre shopping mall or the TTC subway stations, are rare enough that the average Torontonian gets upset instead of shrugs. Most crimes I think are theft of vehicles and cell phones / laptops, and unwatched wallets and purses. They re the crimes that happen around me in daylight - stores, public transit, public places. I don t know about the night life, but I think crime is generally quiet and unobtrusive.

I've lived in Toronto. Crime happens. Such a thing is possible. It's not a common thing that happens around every street corner, but it happens. (And yes, the area around Jane, North-West Toronto, isn't that great. The residence around YorkU also has a bad reputation)

I've lived in enough countries to know that crime happens everywhere because criminals are everywhere. If you write to to be believable, it will be believable.
