Hi, I live in the UK and I have fallen for a '72 Ford LTD Coupe with a 400 cubic inch V8 in it, at a dealers some 250 miles away...?
It hasn't sold at £6k, so has been lowered to 5 grand. I wouldn't use it much, just evenings and some weekend cruises. I know the consumption is going to be teens for Miles/Gallon.
Is a good later engine and maybe manual gearbox I could fit, to give mid-20's? Perhaps a 5 litre Fox-body Mustang motor and transmission would be more efficient than the 6.6litres in it at the moment, especially moving to fuel-injection from carburettor? Anyone in the UK do this?

I'd consider a 351W(5.8L) fuel injected engine. The 302 is going to be bit short on torque. A newer 351W will have more power and get somewhat better fuel economy, parts will also be more plentiful and cheaper.

And what's the question? 250 miles is nothing. I rack up 630 miles a weak driving most of that to a city 200 miles away once a week.

Changing the engine and transmission will cost far more than the car. It will then not be standard which could devalue it.
The insurance will not like it modified.
Insurance could be high depending on your age and occupation.
If you think how much fuel you can buy with £5000.
Getting 4 more to the gallon by the changes if you can will let you drive it a long way before you are in profit.

Yes, that plan sounds reasonable specially since the engine of this 1972 vehicle is way past due an overhaul anyway. As to who, where and how as to get this done, you shall have to do the leg work, the research as to who would do the work at establish a cost. Best of luck.

That is a hulk of a car with very bad gas mileage for a country where the cost is astronomical compared to where the car was built. Also, that engine was built to run on unleaded fuel. If you cannot get leaded fuel, the valves will recede into their seats necessitating the heads to be rebuilt with upgraded valves and seats. What do I know. Maybe you don't mind spending $200 a week on gas for a worn out American car.

It didn't sell because no one was dumb enough to buy it. That car is over 40 years old and getting parts for it will be impossible.
You're right you won't use it much. It will never be running.

stay away from it. it's 43 years old and junk. mileage will be horrible at appx. 12-14. fox body mustang isn't the answer either since they are also very old and mostly junk. I predict you will put about 10,000 us dollars into the beast and have a boat anchor when your done. they should pay you to take it. if you decide to buy it you will be forever sorry.

Maybe instead of going on about a big guy wanting to ride a motorcycle you should open a ******* book and get mechanically inclined. I hope you wreck and die in it for all I care. :)

Really!?!?! Most normal people fall for a member of the opposite or, if homosexual same sex, not a car. DO YOU REALIZE THAT THIS "LAND YACHT" is unfit for European, much less UK roads??
