What does the Confederate flag represent?

It is the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was adopted by former confederates after the war to show pride in the Antebellum (Pre-Civil War) Southern way of life, not necessarily slavery. However, when people today speak of the "Old South," they can't think of anything but slavery. It is just a flag... but it means so much more to to each different person that casts a gaze upon it.

    Nothing

It was used to identify the confederate army/lines, the original Confederate flag was often confused with the stars and stripes during the early part of the war

    different things to different people.

to southerners, it represents the history and culture of the south.

to northerners and african-americans, it represents the confederacy and slavery.

to racists and white separatists, it can mean anything from white pride to outright racism.

i choose not to associate myself with that symbol, because it is too steeped in racism to use it for any other purpose. (even though i am from the south)

personally, i can love the south without having to use an offensive symbol to show it.
