My chinchilla's partner died. What should I do?

One of my chinchillas died today, and I am worried about my other one, Barbosa. They were already paired up when I got them 5 years ago. I have done some research and gotten some conflicking results on what to do for him. I know to treat him extra good for a while and give him extra attention so he doesn't feel lonley. I know they are social animals so should I get him another friend? If so, should I get another adult or a younger one? Male or female?(the other one was male) Barbosa is about 7 years old and he was born without a front right arm. I am worried that he might be 'picked on' by a new animal. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks.

Give Barbosa all the attention you can. Buy or make something called a "cuddle buddy". Monitor him for lethargy, and if that happens, take him to the vet.

What you shouldn't do is buy another chinchilla straight away. He may never accept a new chinchilla, but you need to give it time, first. Wait some months before thinking about abother animal, and remember that introduction is a very long, slow process. Don't try to force anything.

I had the same problem with my pet mice. The second one ended up dying a week later. I think you should not get another chinchilla because what if in three years you're current chinchilla will die, would you then buy him a friend too? Maybe get two chinchillas as a friend.
