I'm a Catholic Christian and I'm not afraid of my own thoughts at all. I just ask God to help guard my thoughts so that they don't lead me into sin. Sinful thoughts can lead to evil deeds. We're all human, so we're going to make these mistakes once in a while. But God's always there to reconcile to us if we ask him. He is faithful and just and wants to forgive us.

It works pretty good. There are some thoughts that only lead to trouble. We can't stop some from involuntarily popping in, but we can refrain from entertaining them. It's entertaining thoughts about anger, jealousy, pride, lust, and envy that lead to trouble.

What's it like? Usually Christians who refrain from entertaining sinful thoughts are happier. They are less likely to act on those thoughts and they don't dwell on things that will make them unhappy.

I wouldn't know. It looks to me like the fear is among those who are terrified at the thought of a God who is perfect in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. With righteousness, compassion, grace, and mercy is able to grant His guidance to His people. The fear is among those who reject God, and have nothing but their own thoughts to lean on.
