Can you take a digital photo of a vampire?

In traditional vampire legend vampires don't reflect in mirrors and don't show up on film. (With, obviously, a lot of stories that vary from the traditional legend.)

Has this legend been updated? Do vampires show up in digital photos? Can a vampire use an automatic paper towel dispenser?

It doesn't work like that. While real societies progress and evolve, ancient stories stay where they are forever. They're sealed off from reality.

If classic stories could be revisited and updated, nobody would recognize them after a while. Think about what that would do to old Count Dracula, since that's the example you mentioned.

Back when that story was written, the author simply didn't know a lot of what is now common knowledge and accepted cultural norms. Not only would he need to be visible to digital photography or not, everything else about him would be different too. Since we now know that moonlight is just reflected sunlight, he would burn to death (more slowly) at night too. Not only would he be afraid of crosses and bibles, he would also fear crescent moons, six-pointed stars, and those little bald guys with the orange robes. His secret castle would be visible on Google Maps, but nobody would visit there because there's no cell signal. People would watch him turn into a bat, but instead of running in terror they'd applaud and comment that he's almost as good as that Mindfreak guy.

See how it works? That's why ancient stories have to be left alone, and why you can't start what-iffing them to death.

In the British television show Being Human, which was shown on BBC, then later adapted by the SyFy network for an American version of the show, they addressed this issue. In the BBC version, the vampire on the series is taken to police headquarters. He does not show up on surveillance cameras. There is a scene where the police are roughing him up during an interrogation. When they cut to the monitor that no one happens to be paying attention to, it looks like the police officer is just going crazy and swinging at the air. When the vampire gets away, he has to go back and get the footage because it would prove to anyone there that he for some whatever strange reason doesn't show up on camera. The other vampires tell him he has to get it back because it can prove their existence. So, the vampire ends up making an assault on the police station to recover its digital camera records. Incidentally, he is able to sneak back by coming down the center of a hall that is around the corner from a guard and uses a mirror for the guard to be able to monitor that hallway. There are several scenes where you see him walking and they show the round surveillance mirror at the ceiling that shows no reflection.

Granted, all this is a bit of a stretch. In vampire lore, the reason a vampire doesn't show up in mirrors and pictures is that in the past both mirrors and cameras used used silver or silver nitrate, which vampires react negatively to silver. Silveer was used in the developing of film and to coat/paint the back of glass to turn it into a mirror. So, strictly speaking, if the camera didn't employ silver or if you made a camera or mirror that didn't use silver, in theory, it should work.

Ok, you all are not understanding the Question. First off, Of course this a Hypothetical Question. It is based on the Legend and concept. And thus you have to base it around the same idea.

What is that idea? well, the origin of the idea that Vampires do not have a Reflection dates back to the old idea of WHAT a Reflection is. When the legend originated, we had no real concept of what light reflection, or how our eyes even worked.

A Reflection was thought to be a literal mirror reflection of your Soul. This was your body, and a reflection was you seeing your Soul. Thus, a Vampire (and many Demons) did not have reflections, as they did not have Souls. Same for their Shadows, as they where thought to be something similar.

SO based on THAT Concept, No. a Vampire would not appear on camera or in photos, as those would be seen as the same as a Mirror, simply a reflection of your soul (which they do not have).

    The Space Vampires- Wikipedia

  • Vampires, to begin with, are not real and never were. But if we are speaking hypothetically, then a vampire can be seen in a mirror, shows up in pictures, and any other media, because light works the same way regardless. If you can see something it has to reflect in a mirror. Light comes from the source, strikes the object, reflects to our eyes, and is processed by our brain as visual images. In the case of a mirror, the light reflects off the object, strikes the mirror, reflects off of it, and is picked up by our eyes. Light reflects off the object and enters the camera through the lens, and is recorded by light sensitive mechanisms.

In each case the reflected light carries the same visual data - regardless of where it goes - either to our eyes, to a mirror, or to a camera. A vampire, if it existed, would show up regardless of media, because reflected light works the same way every time.

BTW, in the common lore it wasn't vampires who were adversely affected by silver - it was the werewolves, who were harmed by it, could be killed by it, and who didn't regenerate from wounds inflicted by it. Lorewise silver has nothing to do with vampires for the most part.

They can't take pictures because pictures steal your soul and Vampires don't have souls, but the toilet paper dispenser is (I believe) motion sensitive so I'm sure they can use those.

No. There is a rare medical condition where a person craves blood but not like what you are saying.
