What is the difference between being transgender and being intersex? Also then there is the word hermaphrodite, what does that mean?
Only thoughtful, knowledgeable answers only. I am offended by rude and mean answers that are not open to the subject.

Transgender is an umbrella term that includes all types of gender variant people - crossdressers, drag queens, intersexed, transsexual, etc etc. Many people today use "transgender" as being the same as transsexual but it's not. Transsexual is a specific term that refers to a person who has a brain sex of one gender but the body of another (so-called "trapped in the wrong body").
An intersex person is someone who was born with ambiguous genitalia - but like transsexual people they have a specific gender identity that could be either male or female depending on the sex of their brain. Many intersex people in the past were wrongly gendered at birth and given sexual reassignment surgery, only to find out later that the wrong choice was made.
"Hermaphrodite" refers to an organism that has both male and female functioning organs. This is not possible in human beings as you cannot have a penis and vagina occupying the same space.

Hermaphrodite is the old word for Intersex but much like with the word Homosexual it is rarely used.
An Intersex person is someone that is born with ambiguous genitalia, such as a penis and a vagina. A Trangendered person is someone that is either born as a man or a woman but identifies him or herself as the other. Example a person born in a male body but identifies as a woman and vice versa.
However some Intersex people are Transgender if their parents decided to remove some of their parts. Say they removed the child's penis but later that person identifies as a man.
